The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration. Located in Las Vegas, the epicenter of the world’s hospitality industry, the College is renowned as a leading force in hospitality management education, professional and executive development, and research, and is home to some of the principal authorities in the field. The successful applicant will have a distinguished record of accomplishment as a scholar, academic administrator, and/or industry leader with a record of outstanding achievement at the most senior level. The Dean will lead this premier program in defining the industry for the 21st century

The Opportunity
The Harrah College of Hotel Administration has an expanding international footprint with a reputation for excellence in its academic programs and cutting edge research. A capital campaign and planning process to construct a new academic building is underway and through curriculum reform and commitment to undergraduate, graduate and executive hospitality management education, the College continues to build upon its pioneering past to make a global impact on the industry today. The College boasts two research centers, the Caesar’s Hospitality Research Center http://www.unlv.edu/hotel/chrc and the International Gaming Institute http://igi.unlv.edu/ and it continues to expand its research mission, best exemplified by the Nevada Governor’s economic development initiative that identifies Las Vegas and UNLV as the global intellectual hub for gaming and hospitality. The College also has strong community partnerships with companies from across the globe, many of which boast UNLV alumni in senior leadership positions.

With more than 2,600 students in its undergraduate program, and more than 50 faculty, the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration is the largest program in the country. Founded on an excellence in teaching, the College continues to successfully prepare its students for careers as leaders in the hospitality industry. Courses offered include human resources, law, organizational behavior, accounting, finance, marketing, facilities management, leadership, food and beverage operations, gaming management, meetings and events, restaurant management and professional golf management, among others. The College is committed to providing its students with the skills and zest for learning that will lead to successful management careers. The College also offers two Master’s degrees (one completely online), two dual Master’s degrees (one with business, the other with Information Systems) and a valued Doctor of Philosophy in Hotel Administration. The Ph.D. program is widely known for producing leading scholars. The success of these scholars is indicative of the College’s emphasis on industry-focused research.

The College offers courses in Switzerland and Jamaica during the summer, as well as a Study in Asia during the winter and has a highly regarded extension program in Singapore.

Role of the Position
The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration and reports directly to the Executive Vice President and Provost. In an environment characterized by shared governance, the Dean is responsible for managing academic, fiscal, physical, and human resources and has major responsibilities in community and alumni relations and fundraising. Among the most significant characteristics sought in a candidate is a record of substantial achievement as a scholar, academic administrator, and/or hospitality industry leader with extensive experience and record of outstanding achievement in high level leadership.

The Dean must be committed to:

  • Supporting and promoting exemplary scholarship, superior university teaching, and distinguished university, professional and community/public service
  • Building and facilitating a just, diverse, inclusive, and collegial academic climate
  • Listening, respecting, and appreciating a diverse range of perspectives and expertise, sensitive to varied missions
  • Engaging in fundraising, alumni relations, and community outreach; and
  • Building partnerships with local, regional and national industry, private organizations and government.

Qualifications
A terminal degree in any discipline from a regionally accredited institution, with considerable academic and administrative experience in hospitality management education or experience as an industry leader with extensive experience and a record of outstanding achievement in a high level administrative position; an academic record (or industry equivalent), appropriate to appointment as a tenured full professor; administrative experience at or above department chair or extensive administrative experience at a senior level in the hospitality industry; a demonstrated appreciation for hospitality management education, professional and executive development and research in the hospitality industry; successful record of securing external funding; a command of issues, trends and opportunities in the academic field of hospitality management education and/or the industry; exceptional communication and collaborative problem solving skills; evidence of commitment to student-centered learning and continuing support of alumni.
