The College of Hospitality, Retail, & Sport Management (HRSM) invites applications and nominations in Sustainable Resort Development and Management at the Assistant/Associate Professor rank. The position is located within the college’s School of Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism Management (HRTM). The School serves over 700 students, 400 minors, 30 master’s students and a new Ph.D. program. It employs 15 full-time faculty and a number of distinguished adjunct faculty.
With internationally known resort destinations such as Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Hilton Head Island, and Kiawah Island, resort development and management contributes significantly to South Carolina’s economy. Globally, resort development and management is emerging as a key economic development strategy for many countries and regions. It is important that potential resort assets are developed and managed sustainably, considering the environmental, social, cultural, and economic impacts on local communities.
The successful candidate shall have industry and academic expertise and experience in hospitality management with a focus in sustainable resort development, especially with physical and financial assets. This could include broad expertise in resort operations and/or sustainable real estate development. Desirable research interests and experiences related to sustainable resort development include golf, spas, timeshares, clubs, equine, luxury retail, medical tourism, culinary tourism, and gaming. Working with local real estate and resort industry groups, the successful candidate will have an interest in developing courses and workshops that might lead to an internationally marketed “master resort developer” executive certification.
The successful candidate would also be a Research Associate with the thriving SmartState Center of Economic Excellence in Tourism & Economic Development. As part of the Center, candidates will have the opportunity to work on research proposals and funded research projects that serve the tourism/hospitality industry in the state. Additional compensation will be provided for the dual responsibility.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and fostering relationships with hospitality and resort sectors of the industry. It is expected that these relationships will lead to research and professional opportunities for students as well as research outlets for HRTM faculty. Candidates must be student-oriented and possess strong leadership skills conducive to building premier undergraduate and graduate programs in HRTM.
A Ph.D. in hospitality management, tourism management, real estate, or related discipline is required. Successful candidates will be expected to teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses, demonstrate an active, innovative, applied research agenda; identify and seek external funding to support research and graduate students and provide service that is beneficial to the school, college, and university.
