North East North American Federation
2017 Highlights from the HX: The Hotel Experience, NENA Experience in New York & Fall Federation Meeting
While writing this article, I am leaving PENN Station on the Northeast Regional train heading south back to Washington, DC, I am reflecting on the last two event filled days in New York City, USA. HX: The Hotel Experience is a time for re-connection and reunion for the NENA Federation members and all of ICHRIE. It was great seeing educators, students and stakeholders from all over the world in attendance. As a Federation, we were not only represented but involved in the show and surrounding events.
On Sunday morning, during the HX: Onstage, Omari Head (Cheney University & UMES) moderated a lively and informative discussion entitled INSTASNAPTWEET on converting millennial travel preferences into a profitable segment for hospitality organizations.
Sunday evening was the first time the NENA Federation launched the new name of our former Alligator Hour entitled NENA CHRIE Experience in New York. Thank you to The Hart School at James Madison University and the University of New Hampshire for their sponsorship of the event which was much appreciated. There were over 60 individuals in attendance with chatter, cheers and enjoyment at HB Burger in Time Square. The networking and reconnecting was electric. Thank you to Michael Sabitoni (Johnson & Wales) winner of the 50/50 raffle, for donating his winnings back to the Promise Award, providing a $160.00 additional dollar for the award.
On Monday morning, the NENA Federation meeting was held with 27 members present.
A huge thank you to the Jonathan M. Tisch Center for Hospitality and Tourism at New York University for hosting us again and sponsoring the continental breakfast. The meeting opened with our guest speaker Robert Hennigan, Associate Director, Protiviti Forensic. Mr. Hennigan has held various management roles at the Federal Bureau of Investigation and currently specializes in various areas including crisis management. He was responsible for the management of FBI specialty teams including SWAT and for special events such as the Super Bowl 2014, US Open, New York City Marathon, and the 2015 NBA All-Star Game. Mr. Hennigan spoke on physical security needed at an event, security for event speakers deemed controversial and threat intelligence. Thank you to Kirsten Tripodi (Farleigh Dickenson University) for securing the NENA Federation meeting. Federation updates were provided from each Board member present with engaged discussion regarding activities within the federation. Stay tuned for federation updates for this spring and summer 2018.
In addition, it is that time for a Call to Action as we are in the process of seeking individuals for the 2018/19 NENA Board. Thank you to David Schweiger (Northampton Community College), Joy Dickerson (Widener University) and Josette Katz (Atlantic Community College) for serving on the nomination committee. The positions that need to be filled are Vice President, Treasurer, Director of Marketing, Director of Membership and Director of Industry Relations. If you know someone who would be interested in serving on the board for the Federation that connects, or if you are interested, please reach out to any member of the nomination committee.
Lastly, the NENA Federation swept the Smith Travel Research (STR) student competition this year. Congratulations to the federation schools and their leadership:
1st place winner
2nd place winner
3rd place winner
