CHRIE FutureFund™ Spends 100% of Funds Raised on Awards for Members

When deciding to provide a donation, individuals often inquire as to how their donation will be used.

The very best charities, according to philanthropic research, spend the overwhelming percentage of funds on actual charitable activities, and not on such items as marketing or salaries. However, your CHRIE FutureFund™ has always spent 100% of any funds received on awards, so you can be assured your donation is being maximized.

While neither ICHRIE nor CHRIE FutureFund™ are charities, ICHRIE is a non-profit entity that focuses on education. CHRIE FutureFund™, for explanatory purposes, is an investment account under supervision of the ICHRIE Finance Committee that supports the long-term success of ICHRIE and its members. For those who file taxes in the United States there is a slight advantage to donating funds to non-profits/charities, and with changes in recent U.S. tax laws may only apply to those who itemize deductions. It is understood that those from outside the U.S. may have different rules associated with donating to non-profits and charities. What is important to know is that writing a significant check to CHRIE FutureFund™ will have maximum impact of the amount.

CHRIE FUTUREFUND™ Introduces the Legacy Program

Since its founding in the mid-1990’s by a group of ICHRIE members, the CHRIE Future Fund has been dedicated to providing support to the ICHRIE membership while also building a long-term rainy-day fund for ICHRIE. Fun(d) activities at the Annual Conference have generated slightly over $200,000 in total donations to date, a significant accomplishment and one that has benefited many ICHRIE members. The success of the CHRIE Future Fund requires a continual accumulation of donations, while the growth of the fund coupled with a reasonable level of return ensures long-term viability.

The CHRIE Future Fund™ has provided support for the Knowledge Matters Challenge, Case Study Competition, Graduate Student and Graduate Research Conference Best Paper Winners, Dissertation Proposal Competition Winners, and registration to the Annual ICHRIE Conference for twenty-four (24) faculty from developing nations. CHRIE Future Fund Committee members have discussed the increasing number of requests for support and want to assist those that meet the objectives of the CHRIE Future Fund. As the name implies, the CHRIE Future Fund is focused on ensuring the long-term future of hospitality and tourism education, and thus also the future of ICHRIE as the leading association for those involved in hospitality and tourism education.

CHRIE FutureFund™ Thanks ICHRIE Members

CHRIE FutureFund™ Thanks ICHRIE Members

CHRIE FutureFund™ had a very successful Annual Conference in Phoenix and thank all ICHRIE members who supported CHRIE FutureFund™ initiatives.  The leadership of co-chairs Misty Johanson and Carl Winston resulted in the support of five (5) doctoral students attending the Annual Conference as winners of the inaugural Dissertation Competition, and four (4) Best Paper Winners from the Graduate Conference held last January. The return of the highly anticipated Duck Race drew a raucous crowd around the Lazy River at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa and raised just shy of $2,000.  The annual 50-50 Raffle raised a record $4,060. Along with the $4,000 donation to support the Grad Conference Best Paper Winners, your Future Fund raised approximately $10,000 to date in 2023. This achievement would not be possible without your support.

The CHRIE FutureFund™ has identified support for graduate education and the support of graduate students as a primary objective. Graduate students are the future professoriate, so supporting our future helps ensure member institutions have qualified, talented individuals on their teams, and these future faculty will become leaders within their respective programs and ICHRIE. Over the next several weeks we will introduce you to the individual doctoral students we supported this year.  Each has a wonderful story to tell, and each will be a terrific addition to any hospitality program. For now, we share the work for which each won their respective award.

ICHRIE & Future Fund Support Graduate Students Research

For many years, ICHRIE and its CHRIE FutureFund™ had supported Best Paper winners from the Graduate Education & Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality & Tourism by awarding complimentary registration to the ICHRIE Annual Conference to each student winner.  During Future Fund Committee meetings held in fall 2022, co-chairs Misty Johansen and Carl Winston encouraged committee members to think bigger in terms of Future Fund impact. At its December meeting, committee members voted unanimously to approve awarding each student Best Paper winner from the Graduate Conference with a $1,000 award voucher. The award voucher provided complimentary registration for the 2023 ICHRIE Annual Summer Conference in Phoenix, as well as allowing the respective winner to choose among a complimentary one-year ICHRIE membership, reimbursement of lodging in the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa during conference, or reimbursement of airfare to/from Phoenix, with total award maximum of $1,000.
