Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Education

SPECIAL ISSUE
Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Teaching and Learning for Hospitality and Tourism Education

Call for Papers

In the era of digital transformation, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful general-purpose technology capable of revolutionizing various industries. The rapid advancement of AI technologies, including generative AI (e.g., GPT-4), robotics, computer vision, and machine learning is reshaping the landscape of the H&T industry. These technologies are being integrated into various aspects of the sector, from customer service and operations and revenue management to marketing and strategic decision-making (Huang et al., 2022). However, the role of AI and generative AI (genAI) in higher education over the long terms remains an open question (Swaak, 2024).

As AI and genAI continue to permeate the hospitality and tourism industry, it brings about significant changes and challenges for both professionals and educators (Yusuf et al., 2024). This rapid technological advancement also underscores the urgency of integrating AI technologies into educational and training programs within the hospitality and tourism sector (Al-Zahrani, 2023). Educational institutions face the critical task of adapting their curricula and teaching methodologies to prepare future professionals equipped with the in-demand skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in an AI-infused landscape (Adeyinka-Ojo et al., 2020). This includes not only understanding AI technologies but also developing competencies in data literacy, ethical considerations, and AI-driven decision-making processes (Adeyinka-Ojo et al., 2020). The challenge lies in striking a balance between traditional hospitality skills and new technological proficiencies. The rapid advancements in AI will likely bring disruptive changes to the H&T industry and transfer how educators and research approach operations, marketing, human resources, revenue management, accounting, finance, and other management strategies (Dogru et al., 2023). The evolving landscape calls for a continuous re-evaluation of educational content, ensuring it remains relevant and forward-thinking in addressing the needs of both the industry and the students.

JHTR Now Accepting Registered Research

The Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Research (JHTR) has a new submission category, Registered Research, now open for submissions.

JHTR is participating in the Center for Open Science registered reports initiative, called JHTR Registered Research (JRR). JRR are empirical studies whose introduction, methods, and proposed analyses have been reviewed before data collection. These papers go through a two-stage review process. Stage 1 is a peer review of the proposed study before data collection and Stage 2 is a peer review of the final paper once data collection and analyses are complete. If a JRR is accepted after the Stage 1 review, it will be in-principle accepted. This means that pending rigorous adherence to the protocol approved in the Stage 1 manuscript, the final paper will be accepted for publication after peer review by the same team of reviewers in Stage 2. Being fully equivalent to the regular submission category, JRRs are treated as regular research papers once published. As a publication, there is no difference whatsoever.

CHRIE FutureFund™ Spends 100% of Funds Raised on Awards for Members

When deciding to provide a donation, individuals often inquire as to how their donation will be used.

The very best charities, according to philanthropic research, spend the overwhelming percentage of funds on actual charitable activities, and not on such items as marketing or salaries. However, your CHRIE FutureFund™ has always spent 100% of any funds received on awards, so you can be assured your donation is being maximized.

While neither ICHRIE nor CHRIE FutureFund™ are charities, ICHRIE is a non-profit entity that focuses on education. CHRIE FutureFund™, for explanatory purposes, is an investment account under supervision of the ICHRIE Finance Committee that supports the long-term success of ICHRIE and its members. For those who file taxes in the United States there is a slight advantage to donating funds to non-profits/charities, and with changes in recent U.S. tax laws may only apply to those who itemize deductions. It is understood that those from outside the U.S. may have different rules associated with donating to non-profits and charities. What is important to know is that writing a significant check to CHRIE FutureFund™ will have maximum impact of the amount.

THAT’S A WRAP!

The 9th Annual SECSACHRIE Conference, hosted by the College of Hospitality, Retail & Sport Management at the University of South Carolina (USC), under the theme Where history, culture and southern hospitality meet, was a resounding success. During the two days, we networked with, participated in, and listened to 63 presentations from 27 universities and companies, alongside 97 conference attendees and participants. We saw a record number of pedagogy presentations as the SECSA community continues to celebrate research and content in this area.

We extend our profound gratitude to Mr. Troy Flanagan of the AHLA for his informative and eye-opening keynote address reviewing issues surrounding staffing, as we embrace our role as educators in providing exceptional employees for our industry. Our industry panel was diverse, covering the legal, lodging, beverage and DMO components of our industry. I quote the industry panel moderator and Director of Research, Dr. Wei Wei:
