The position is a full-time, 9-month commitment at the assistant professor level with a start date of August 2023. The position is housed within the Department of Business and Economics. The Department of Business and Economics is at a critical juncture with recent investments from the General Assembly to create an interdisciplinary program in Hospitality and Tourism Management that aligns with regional economic development efforts, particularly new investments by Hard Rock Corporation to build an entertainment district in Bristol, Virginia around a casino that opened in summer 2022 and a full-scale resort slated for opening in 2024. This position in Hospitality and Tourism Management is new at UVA Wise, offering an opportunity for someone who is innovative and entrepreneurial to develop a concentration, eventually a major, in Hospitality and Tourism. We seek a person with the academic background to build such a program, but also who has experience working with business and industry partners in the hospitality/tourism/event management sector to create internships and other experiential learning opportunities for students. Duties include creating and teaching undergraduate courses in hospitality and tourism management at both the introductory and advanced undergraduate levels; serving the department and college on various committees; advising students; pursuing ongoing scholarly activity preferably in conjunction with undergraduate students; and assisting the department chair with assessment and other duties as needed. Successful candidates must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; must have a Ph.D. (ABD candidates will be considered but must have the Ph.D. completed by the date of appointment) in Hospitality and Tourism Management or an equivalent research degree; and should have the demonstrated ability for engaged and innovative teaching at the undergraduate level. The successful candidate will also possess an explicit interest in UVA Wise’s student-centered and experiential learning mission and integrating its liberal arts curriculum with the Department’s professional education. Institutional Profile Application Instructions UVA Wise is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer committed to excellence through diversity.
